2024 Connecticut Junior Science and Humanities Symposium: Registration is OPEN

Dear CT-JSHS Community,

We hope you are well and excited for the upcoming 2024 CT-JSHS to be held at UConn Health February 24, 2024.

There are several changes for this year, including a new registration/application system provided by National JSHS on Ideal-Logic. We have compiled some helpful tips here.

The CT-JSHS Administrative Team has created an Application Check List to help students complete their application for competition. Please click here to download the check list.

A MAJOR change this year is that ALL application materials must be submitted in Ideal-Logic by December 11 (11:59 PM EASTERN) for students wanting to be reviewed for competition. Please carefully review the application check list (link above) and application/registration tips on the CT-JSHS website to help guide you during your registration/application process.

If you are submitting research collected as part of a group project, please take special note of the group project guidelines for your application found here.

For seasoned applicants, the video component has been eliminated from this year’s CT-JSHS application.

More information can be found on the CT-JSHS website: https://ctjshs.com.

We look forward to reviewing your application and learning what you have been busy researching since last year!

If you are new to CT-JSHS and have questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Brittany Knight, the Regional Director of CT-JSHS, at ctjshs.knight@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

CT-JSHS Team

(Free) Register Now! CT Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (grades 9-12)

Registration closes December 13, 2022 ~
Registration for the 2023 Connecticut Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is accessible via the CT-JSHS web page at ctjshs.com or directly at https://cvent.me/XXxvWz.
  • Each school can select up to 10 students to register/apply online by extended deadline of December 16, 2022, to attend as observers or presenters. (Home-schooled students are also welcome.)
  • Students must be accompanied by a chaperone (for one or a group of up to 10) on the day of the symposium.
  • Some activities will take place online during pre-week. The CT-JSHS Game (win a gift card!) features online activities.

HOW DO STUDENTS AND CHAPERONES REGISTER TO ATTEND?

Student registration:

  • Students should ask their science teacher if they can be included in the school’s delegation (of just one or up to ten students)
  • Students may attend as a presenter or an “observer” (non-presenter):
    • If applying to present, select registration type “Student Participant” when you register.
    • If NOT applying to present, select registration type “Other/Guest” and then on the “JSHS Custom Questions” page, select “Student who is not applying to present”.
  • Those applying to present their research will have until January 5, 2023, to modify their online application with an abstract, Statement of Outside Assistance form, short-answer questions, and a 3-minute video for consideration for oral and poster presentations. This is a competitive process. Applicants will be informed by January 23, 2023, as to whether they have been selected as a presenter.

Teacher registration (chaperone or non-chaperone):

  • If you have student(s) applying to compete, select the category “JSHS Teacher” or “JSHS Mentor” (whichever you prefer/is more appropriate) when you register.
  • If you do NOT have students applying to compete, select the category “JSHS Teacher” when you register.

Parent/guardian registration (chaperone as needed):

  • If the student’s school is not able to provide a chaperone for the school’s delegation, a parent can be a chaperone.
  • Select the registration category “Other/Guest” and then on the “JSHS Custom Questions” page select “Parent/Guardian”.

Key Information for Applicants

DEADLINE TO REGISTER EXTENDED TO DECEMBER 16

UConn Health is hosting the 2023 Connecticut Regional JSHS, held on March 4, 2023, in Farmington, CT. The virtual oral and poster competition will be held February 26, 2023. The non-competitive virtual STEM poster exhibition will be held February 27-March 3.

JSHS is designed to challenge, engage, and publicly recognize students (grades 9-12) conducting research in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Opportunities for career exploration, research lab visits, peer discussions, and networking are planned. By participating in regional and national symposia, students may:

  • Participate in a forum honoring individual achievement in STEM.
  • Network with peers who have similar interests.
  • Hear research presentations by other students.
  • Develop skills to help prepare for undergraduate and graduate pursuits in STEM fields.
  • Hear nationally renowned scientists speak on their work.
  • Qualify for significant scholarships and other recognition.
  • Advance to the national symposium.

Who is a JSHS participant? Connecticut high school students interested in STEM studies can participate either as a presenter or as a student observer. Up to 10 high school students and one teacher from each high school may participate. Homeschooled students are also encouraged to take part. For our live, in-person portion of the symposium, a chaperone with each school’s group will be required. There is no charge for attending. All students, teachers, and guests (parents, school administrators, etc.) who wish to participate are encouraged to do so and register

Who can present at the Connecticut Regional JSHS?

Any high school student attending school in Connecticut may submit an application for consideration.

How do I present at the Connecticut Regional JSHS?

Students in grades 9–12 select an area of research:

  • Environmental Science
  • Life Science
  • Medicine and Health/Behavioral Science
  • Biomedical Sciences, Molecular/Cellular
  • Engineering and Technology
  • Math and Computer Sciences/Computer Engineering
  • Physical Sciences
  • Chemistry

All student participants MUST register for the Regional JSHS event by EXTENDED to 12/16

Students who apply as potential presenters will be asked to go back into their CVENT registration applications and by January 5, 2023, students who wish to present their research at the CT-JSHS must submit an abstract, a Statement of Outside Assistance, a link to a 3-minute video, and answer a few brief questions (listed below) to be part of the review process.

  • Project title:
  • Mentor first name:
  • Mentor last name:
  • Mentor organization or school:
  • Mentor email address:
  • Please read the Video Instructions for details about the video content and criteria.
  • Tell us about your project as you would explain it to a friend or your local newspaper- for a general audience!
  • What actual research have you completed, or is it only planned? Also, was at least part of the research conducted after February, 2022? (We do not allow work that was done in a previous year unless new research has been added.)
  • Has a report of this investigation been presented at a science fair, in an award application, or to any other group?
  • How long have you been collecting data?
  • Select a Research Category of Competition. Please note: your chosen category is not guaranteed.

The Review Committee (about 30 members, composed of CT-JSHS Executive Committee members, faculty members, medical students and graduate students) will review applications in January and let students know of their placement in oral or poster competitive categories or in the STEM poster exhibition category. A maximum of 15 students will be invited to present their projects in the oral competition. A maximum of 16 students will also be invited to present their projects in the poster competition. All of the other students will be considered for participation in the noncompetitive STEM poster exhibition. Students will be notified of their selection to present in one of the three sessions by January 23, 2023.

Please refer to the Core Rules of Competition to ensure your materials follow regional guidelines.

If you have any questions about the process please contact Dr. Brittany Knight (ct-jshs@uchc.edu).
